Blog Question #1

Yesterday in class we listened to one group's presentation on Global Warming and the unstoppable two-meter rise of the oceans. It was a bit scary!

But as was pointed out, everybody has a role to play in saving our environment. So the question is: What do you do? What changes have you made in your lifestyle to make our planet more green and healthy? And do you think that people as individuals can make a difference when so many big oil and manufacturing companies are making it so much harder?

My answer to the big question is a big YES. We can do so much as individuals to address the situation eventhough research shows that primary cause of the global warming are the big factories. What we only need is a proper individual mind set and everthing will follow. Factories are run by individuals and products of these factories are consumed by individuals. So, a proper mind set will really be a solution to this problem. Every move we take consumes energy. We have so many options to choose from on how to do things at the same time save energy. Here are some of my practical suggestions:

1. Turn-off your computer when you are not using it. What we implemented in our department before was to turn-off all our computers during lunch break or if someone will be out of the office for more than 30 minutes. With this move, we were able to save 50 man hours of computer time per day just for this simple collaborative act.

2. Turn-on lights when it is needed only. You don't have to light the whole floor if you are the only one in the floor and you will only read. A lamp may serve your purpose.

3. Walk if you can, car poolo or take public transport. If everyone will do this, just don't know how much we can save. You get exercise, yhou gain friends, you share the load are just some benefits of this.

4. Patronize goods that are environment friendly. Not until everyone will be consious about this, all companies who are not responsible enough will continue to do what they are doing. Kills their business may be a pill for them to wake up and do things right.

From CEO to messengers, from prime ministers to members of the city council - all are individuals who decides, chooses and dictates the future. A proper mind set is what is needed and it definitely includes me and you.

Alfred is absolutely right. Though we don't have control to these oil and manufacturing companies, each and every individual can contribute in their own little way to make our planet green and healthy. One can start at home like me and my family. I told them to put off lights when they don't need it, do not use microwave very often and the last person who went out of our apartment will make sure that all electrical outlets had been removed. In this way, we're not only saving the environment but we're also saving money in our pocket.

Yes each individual can contribute to adopt a healthy lifestyle to save our environment. It is a fact that we want to make our life convenient and most of the time we ignore our actions even it affects badly in the environment. As a human being, I guess awareness and discipline are the important things we need to practice to help protect our planet. Once we are aware of the causes of the global warming and how it affects us, we should be disciplined enough to do our share.

In my case simple things like I don’t litter and I make sure I recycle the empty plastic containers, bags and paper.
Also, at home we use compact fluorescent light bulbs because it’s less energy than the standard incandescent bulbs. I always remind my husband to drive carefully and make sure his car is always tuned up. Moreover, I save electricity by unplugging appliances if not in use. Lastly, I don’t leave water running.

All people need to wake up and take personal action on global warming solutions.
