One Million Acts of Green

Last night I was watching one of my favourite news programs, "The Hour" with host George Strombolopolous. Have you ever watched this program? It's a good show, aimed at younger people who like to get their current events in a more relaxed, 'hip' manner. One of the things he talked about last night was a new program called One Million Acts of Green. It's a page that is trying to encourage Canadians to do big and small things to save the environment. Hopefully as a group Canadians (and immigrants) can do one million things to help the environment. THey are talking about little things, like washing clothes in cold water, to big things like buying more environmentally friendly cars and products to heat and cool your house. The page also tells us how much Greenhouse gas emmissions we are saving with this act. So, I joined today and I will see what I can do. I already do somethings, but I can do others.

So, my question is... how much difference do you think one person can make to the environment? After all, its the big companies who do the most damage. If I don't remember to switch off my lights, or I let my car run too long, does it matter?

In my opinion, if every one can try their best to help the environment, it will get better.

There are lots of ways to protect the environment. We can take buses or LRT instead of driving; we can use energy saving bulb; we can use baskets or reusable bags instead of plastic bags when we go shopping.

I remembered when I was young, my mom always reminded me to turn off my lights if I forgot to do it. If we do something every day, we will get used to it and we will remember to do it.

In my opinion, everybody has a commitment towards the ENVIRONMENT.

It is a human issue all over the globe. Everybody can introduce something to the Environment, like using clean energy, reusable and recyclable materials, avoid littering while in picnic, and trying to limit and minimize house garbage.

It is our responsibility to preserve the very limited resources for the next generations.

we are all invited to do so and transfer this culture and behavior to our children and everybody who might listen to you.

That's a good point, Ihab. Possibly the best thing we can do for the environment is teach children to have respect for it.

200 years ago, people planted trees just because they knew that someday their grandchildren would be making lives for themselves and would need those trees. Are we doing the same for our grandchildren?

when it comes to environment, every effort no matter how big or small, collective or individual, makes a difference.Every awareness movement starts at individual levels. Behind the big business houses, there are individuals only who make decisions. It is an issue which effects us all, afterall we have only one planet earth to live on.
